Farmers To Receive $102 Million From Wheat Reduction Plan

Secretary Wallace announced signups cover about 80 percent of national seeded acreage under the farm adjustment plan. Cash benefits are projected at over $102 million, with roughly two thirds paid this fall and the first checks going to Virginia counties next week. Peak disbursement to Great Plains wheat regions will occur in November as applications cover 570,263 farms and 51,995,612 acres. A 15 percent reduction aims to cut 7,781,000 acres from next year’s harvest.

Brown Farm Hand Jailed 90 Days For Killing Dogs

In Brown County a Claremont farm hand, John B. McHenry, 28, was convicted for maliciously killing a dog and sentenced to 90 days in jail with a $500 fine. The fine was suspended if he leaves the county for three years after serving time. The dog belonged to William F. Denney of Columbia, with other dogs killed in the community. The court found him responsible.
