New Trophy Is Offered by Legion in South Dakota

Watertown October 2 Special A new trophy the Walte Dyce trophy will be awarded to the South Dakota post of the American Legion for the highest percentage of its average membership over the last two years on January 3, 1933. The trophy, donated by Mr. Deco, aims to boost membership drives. Department records show overall membership below last year, though larger posts report many cards pending. Adjutant J D Mullaney urges posts to enroll members before the Indiana conference. Previously a telegraphic roll call was used. this year cards will be carried by officers. Current totals show 118 cards at the department, with Frankfort and Norst noted in varying standings.

Wessington Child Breaks Both Arms

A 12-year-old boy, son of Mr and Mrs Koch of Wessington, fell from the schoolhouse steps. Both lower arm bones were broken and the fractured limbs have been set. He is reported to be as comfortable as possible.

Lake Preston Eastern Star held a Washington bicentennial program Tuesday evening to commemorate the nation's first president. The event opened with a flag drill by 10 youths, featured vocal selections by Mrs H Whinsley, and closed with Martha Bates presenting Thoughts from the memo of George Washington. Mrs W Peterman reviewed recent grand chapter meetings in Aberdeen.

Farmers Are Busy With Corn Picking In Wagner

Farmers in this community work harvest as labor prices stay low. Corn yields range from about 15 to 22 bushels per acre, goats yield around 9 to 12 bushels per acre, and other fields vary from seven to more than two. Grain markets are stagnant with little livestock trading. only cream eggs and some poultry move to meet groceries and needs as corn prices hover around 9 to 9.5 cents per bushel.

Watertown Hunter Shot Accidentally

Watertown reports a hunter shot and severely wounded when a 12 gauge shotgun discharged accidentally by hunting companion Thomas Casey. William Walsh was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition with the shot just below the spine during pheasant hunting north of Ranville.

Fire Losses Rise in South Dakota Fires and Suspects

Pierre reports in the last three fiscal years fires increased while incendiary and suspect blazes grew. For year ended June 30 1933 there were 145 fires causing 1 852 595 dollars damage versus 173 fires and 1 786 514 dollars in 1932. Incendiary blazes numbered 32 with 115 751 dollars loss, up from 16 and 17 297 dollars. The 1930 figure lists 74 blazes and 948 403 dollars. More than 140 fires were investigated as suspects in 1992, far above prior years. There were 1258 fires including 526 dwellings and 153 stores and warehouses with major losses.

Watertown October 27 Special Pat Haley of Yankton has been named district commander of the seventh district of the American Legion in South Dakota. The appointment was announced by Department Commander H C Kehm of Harrisburg. Haley succeeds B J Skordahl of Vermillion. Haley has long been active in Legion affairs and is post adjutant at Yankton.
