Pow Wow Day Origins From First Homecoming 1923 At Huron

The tradition traces to 1923 when Huron College president George S McCune started Pow Wow Day to boost school interest. A two mile parade led by the Huron Municipal Band featured 125 floats with a purple and gold boat for Big Chief McCune and Princess Rosalie Challacombe. Crowds capped the day with football games, awards, and a mystic fire ceremony, ending with the Aaron College song as Indians danced to tom toms. Some attended theatre after the event.
