Mitchell Road to Let Contract on U S 16 at Mitchell

The federal Bureau of Public Roads approved three South Dakota highway projects. A 9.987 mile gravel base on U S 16 between Mitchell and Vernon was awarded to Martin Joyce of Brandon for 12772.23. Mitchell delegates pressed for pavement but the oil base was approved instead. Other approved works included 5.037 miles of grading on the Oacoma Gregory road in Lyman Winner and 18.294 miles of grading north of Hays in Stanley. Next construction setting slated for November 2 if the bureau approves outlined projects.

Scanlon Sent To Banking Meeting In Pierre

Pierre October 18 The state banking department sent Tom Scanlon assistant superintendent of banks to Minneapolis to attend a meeting on closed bank liquidation. C J Jaffrey chairman of the ninth federal reserve district depositors liquidation committee called the meeting. F R K Strain said Scanlon would learn details of RFC loans to closed banks for depositors. Strain noted 17 South Dakota banks closed since January 1 with about 2 000 000 in deposits.

Mrs Walter Ebbert Rites Set Near Carpenter

Funeral services for Mrs Walter Ebbert of Carpenter who died at a local hospital follow a three week illness after childbirth. Rev N A Luke will officiate at Wolocktha and burial will be in Doland with LaDelle Rebekah lodge aiding at the grave. Survived by husband Ebbert four daughters two sons her parents and siblings.

Playcrafters pledge nine new members at USD meeting

Vermillion October 18 Playcrafters drama society at the University of South Dakota pledged nine students at their first meeting October 12. New pledges include Wanda McLaughlin Watertown Catherine Martens Pierre Margaret Schlosser Plankinton Elsie Titt Yuron John Adams Sioux Falls Wilbur Townsend Lead John Smiley Mount Vernon Joe Lehmann Scotland Woodrow Spranger Sioux Falls. Members must cast direct and present a play without outside help at a combined meeting of Playcrafters and Apprentice Players.

The executive committee of the Scotti er Social Work association chose Mitchell for the annual spring meeting in 1938. Attendees from scattered parts of the state attended the session.

Compliance Board Rejects Huron NRA Wage Request

The NRA Compliance board last night refused a merchant's request to operate under a pending code that would allow longer hours and lower wages, noting the code had not been approved by Washington officials. Further review will address complaints about a consumer patronizing a non Blue Eagle establishment. A separate complaint was dropped after proof the employer operated under an approved industrial code.

Chase Securities Corpora tion formed to do bank's lacking business

Albert Wiggin former Chase National Bank chairman told senate investigators that the Case Securities corporation was organized in 1917 to do business the bank could not perform. He said a securities company would let stockholders share in underwriting that the national bank could not. The committee pressed Wiggin on rescue party records and executive session was called.

Dismissal of Canton Indian Hospital Superintendent Praised

Indian Commissioner John Lollier announced a telegram from Norman Ewing praising the dismissal of Dr. H. R. Hummer as superintendent of the Hospital of Indians in Canton South Dakota. Ewing, formerly an engineer at the Canton institution, offered to testify or provide a record alleging patient abuses. Hummer was dismissed Monday after charges filed by Commissioner Collier.

Camp Begin With 139 Ex-Service Men Near Custer

Rapid City October 18 139 ex service men from North Dakota civilian conservation camp units passed through Rapid City en route to Lightning Creek near Custer to establish a camp and work on dam and later road projects. Their Newfoundland mascot traveled with them. About 145 men from the Watertown CC C camp were en route to Calcite north of Piedmont for a winter camp. The U S Bureau of Home Economics lists more than 35 ways to serve corn meal.

A farewell party for Miss Emma Wormstadt was held Saturday near her parents northwest of Huron as she heads to Grand Island Nebraska for college.
