Black fly pest from Big Sioux River eyed for control
Brookings reports entomologist I. C. Severin and team from State College identify the Black flies as a brood from the Big Sioux River near Akron, Iowa. They lay eggs on debris and rocks, producing generations roughly every two months. Female flies bite painfully, threatening livestock and possibly spreading anthrax. The committee urges river clearance above and below Akron, removal of breeding debris, and elimination of larval habitats. Delegation from Haserden, Ta, seeks help for similar local trouble.

Wessington Springs high school held its sixth annual Homecoming with Bernard Prowey and Betty Beil as king and queen. A parade included floats from all departments reflecting local pioneer history. The town’s commercial club provided lunch at City Hall, and Kimball beat Springs 9-23 in the football game. Coronation featured the high school orchestra and a Century of Progress themed program.

Skull Fossil Dredged Near Lake Thompson Sparks Battle Theory
An old skull found in gravel near Lake Thompson was once thought to prove a battle by friendly Indians punishing Inkspaduta for the Spirit Lake massacre. Mr Over challenged the theory, finding no sign of such a conflict and noting the skull’s exceptional size, second only to one in a museum. The skull was returned to publisher A. H. Sherwood of De Smet before being sent to the university for study.

Young People of Kingsbury Meet at Interdenominational Conference
A first interdenominational youth conference for Kingsbury county drew 123 attendees at the local Congregational church. Iroquois sent the largest delegation with 25, Lake Preston contributed 24, plus Arlington Hetland and Drakota. Speakers included Prof. A. S. Eschilman of Freeman and Miss Eleanor McCaffree of Sioux Falls. Afternoon and evening sessions featured a banquet at 8:20. Representatives were chosen for the state conference in Aberdeen in December.

D. F. Wilmarth, 78, pioneer De Smet merchant and Odd Fellows member, died of a heart attack after a long local business career begun in 1883 with brother George. He served 13 years as postmaster. funeral services were held at home with Rev. J. T. O Neill officiating. Burial beside his brother. Surviving: widow, son Earl P.
