Move to oust USD coach Backman stirs campus protest

Vermillion Oct Made public yesterday a petition calling for Captain Stanley G Backman USD athletic director removal. Students faculty and townspeople expressed indignation though leaders said action unlikely before the Cincinnati game. Backman said the move had blown over and expected a win tomorrow.

Huron Armour Plant to Observe Anniversary Next Week

Huron residents will learn Armour and Company’s role in the city’s growth during the seven year anniversary celebration next week. The event includes public displays by schools, banks, and retailers, special menus, and the use of anniversary buttons and a whistle at 9 am and 3 pm. Visitors will tour the packing plant to see cattle processing and by product production, with emphasis on Armour products and community impact.

State Officers At Medical Meet

Dr. J. H. Westaby of Madison presented a motion picture on cancer development at the Huron district medical society meeting held at the Marvin Hughitt hotel. Langford secretary Dr. J. F. D. Cook discussed legislative problems in medicine. Papers by Dr. W. L. Matlock on artificial infant feeding and Dr. HL Saylor on sinus intensity were read. Dr. H. D. Sewell presided, with the district meeting following a council session in the afternoon.

New Barber Price Level Established in Several Towns

Barbers from Nina Central South and kota communities set a new price level to take effect tomorrow in Huron Alpena Virgil Wolsey Broadland Bonilla Hitchcock Yale and Cavour. Shaves will be 20 cents and haircuts 49 cents after a meeting led by N E Nelson and Merrill Coursey. A compromise reduced last years rates: shaves from 25 to 15 cents and haircuts from 50 to 25 cents.

Farm Union Adopts Report Favoring New Study Course

The South Dakota division of the Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union of America voted to hold its 1933 convention at Winner after adjournment of its 17th annual state assembly here at noon today. Delegates approved a curriculum report favoring a new course of social studies with debate ending 130 to 40. The union backed nonpartisan ballots for superintendents, opposed four year normal school courses, and endorsed the new course while endorsing the department of public instruction. The convention also urged a tax moratorium until farmers recover production costs and recommended county tax abatements for disease losses. Attendance reached 284 official delegates, with 53 counties represented.

Cannot Hunt In S. D. Unless 15 Years Old

Pierre October 4. The attorney general's office ruled that no person under 15 may be issued a hunting license and may not legally hunt game birds in South Dakota. The 1931 statute bans hunting without a license and officials did not comment on the ruling. Sportsmen plan to seek removal of the restriction at the next legislature.

Washington reports Frances Elizabeth Willis, aged 33, has become the American minister in Stockholm, one of two women in the foreign service to head a U.S. legation. She takes charge as head of the United States mission in a major foreign capital, a rare opportunity for a woman.
