Schools Described as Nation bulwark by Chicago leader

SIOUX FALLS Nov 29 The public schools were described as the bulwark of our nation by Mrs. Holland Flagler of Chicago president of the Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers in an address prepared for tonight's session of the South Dakota Education Association convention. She urged parent teacher associations to form community councils to inform neighborhoods about the peacetime education crisis and to cooperate to safeguard schools against budget cuts.

Burdette school presented songs recitations and a two act play Teacher King Go Home with Evelyn Peterson Lois Lloyd Kathleen Polehow Maurice Olson and Kenneth Seigling in leading roles A ten cent lunch raised 8 60 for the Young Citizens league. Fedora lodges hosted Artesian Carthage Odd Fellows Rebekah for a social evening with cards and dancing A dam project in Fordham township north of Carpenter discussed by county commissioners Alpena teachers rode to Sioux Falls for S D E A Mondry V Linn Curtis Moyck and Miss Kunze Tramp and Davis Club party at Burdete Home Extension family night included games and a pot luck supper.

Pastor Pederson Leaves Redfield for Edmore Pastorate

The Rev. C. S. Pederson, longtime minister of Our Saviors Lutheran church, departed Monday for Edmore North Dakota where he has accepted a pastorate charge. The local vacancy remains open and not yet filled.

Kingsbury County Pays Relief Workers Under C W A Plan

Kingsbury County disbursed 3806.50 to relief employees as part of the new civil works program. The payout followed programs transferring workers from relief and orders to the civil works setup. Hundreds waited at the courthouse for time sheets and payroll processing, with Hollis M. Hill named assistant disbursing agent and two stenographers employed to speed the checks.

Nichols Held For Manslaughter In Auto Crash

Canton November 22 R F Nichols Sioux City was bound over to circuit court on a first degree manslaughter charge after a hearing on an automobile collision south of Worthing November 12 that killed two people. Witnesses said Nichols was intoxicated and driving recklessly. Nichols did not testify. The crash proved fatal to Mrs Robert Clark of Harrisburg who was with Nichols and Ronald Culp infant son of Mr and Mrs Lee Culp of Sioux Falls who were in the other car.

School Children Entertain Lions at De Smet Meeting

Miss Ferne Ford and Rose Hill school presented a two act playset with songs and speaking, performed by six pupils Johnny and Mary pieces, delighting De Smet Lions at their last meeting. The program, modified from a schoolhouse Halloween, recalled childhood days and was praised as one of the best entertainments.

Bonilla Play Experienced Broad Support by School Faculty

The play The Importance of Being Earnest was presented Saturday evening by the city school faculty in Bonilla. It was an unqualified success with 35 characters fitting roles and notable costuming. Dale Reeter entertained between acts with two guitar solos.

Eastern Star Bryant elects officers at Masonic Temple

Fern Logan chapter of the Eastern Star in Bryant held its annual officers election at the Masonic temple. Officers chosen include Mrs Lou Cuse as worthy matron, Mrs Elma Gilbertson assistant matron, RE Malseth worthy patron, C C Balmbach past patron, Mrs Biader Fredrickson secretary, Mrs Ella Silda treasurer, Mrs Elma Rumann conductress, and Mrs nee Young asst conductress. The evening ended with bridge and lunch. Installations planned for December ik.
