Incredible 50 Day Turkey Trek From Yankton to Deadwood

In 1873 Philip Volin drove 1200 turkeys from Yankton to Deadwood to meet Thanksgiving demand. The herd faced six miles daily over prairie, nights in a chicken-wire enclosure, wagons for lame birds and provisions, and fed mainly on grasshoppers. The journey ended with brisk $15 to $20 birds in Deadwood.
