Letters By Fred F B Coffin Show Huron In Its Infancy
Beadle County Historical society preserves letters by Fred F B Coffin detailing early Huron life four weeks after the first shanty, before the railroad reached the town. Coffin describes building a 12 by 14 foot home, cheap living costs, grain quality, frontier saloons, temperance sentiment, and rapid settlement with 25 to 30 buildings. He notes a fatality from a man who died after a lumber wagon accident and explains mail arrived via Volga Mail before a post office existed.
