Children Play With Matches Cause Farm Garage Fire
May 29 report from Canova notes children playing with matches obtained without parental knowledge caused a garage fire on the Franke farm south of Canova destroying the structure. No injuries reported. Fire department and neighbors assisted in efforts to control the blaze.

Pierre Ladhart In Accident With Gun
Lloyd Shifflet, 17, was seriously shot in the arm while attempting to remove a shell from a 12 gauge shotgun. The pellet entered at the chest forearm region near the elbow, causing heavy blood loss. He was taken to a hospital by friends from Pierre where the shooting occurred and received immediate care.
