Wheat Acreage To Be Reduced
The Farmers Union Terminal association reports spring wheat acreage in the northwest will fall about 15 to 20 percent. Northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota show the largest adherence to crop expert advice with reductions of 20 to 44 percent. Seeding of small grains is nearly finished and corn planting is progressing. Conditions for flex, barley and oats are favorable except western Montana where dry weather. Abundant subsoil moisture should carry crops into June. Seed flax is scarce and early flax may suffer frost damage. Rye outlook is good and flax crop prospects are strong. More land will go to barley and seed crops. pastures are excellent. Spring wheat areas show ideal conditions overall, but some spindly straw and short heads in Kansas offset Northwest forecasts. Prices have advanced.
