Mrs Wilson Filthach chaired the gathering as a lunch for Jack ended the official portion. A farewell lunch concluded with a social period for the remainder of the evening.
May 25 marked the completion of all 1940 shelterbelt planting in South Dakota. The project ran later than previous years due to late sparing and cool conditions. About 560 miles of new shelterbelts on 1,250 eastern farms, plus over 750 miles of belts replaced, with 32 working days and more than 900 planters involved.

May 27 Faulkton special. The Red Cross Faulk County chapter announces local committee chairmen for communities. Grade school exercises held at Doland feature eighth grade program with valedictorian Sarah Long salutatorian Marilyn Tschett and diplomas awarded to multiple graduates.
The Erwin High School senior class completed and published its first annual yearbook titled Papnncanis. About FN volumes were produced, containing 84 pages of photographs and school activity accounts, under the direction of Amos Tschetter and tadorna Miller.
Spearfish Normal will graduate its first four-year class since 1932 as 24 students receive diplomas at the 43rd annual commencement on May 29. State teacher certificates go to 55 and first-grade certificates to 91. Dr Eckhardt of the University of Colorado will speak.
Harrold High School awarded diplomas to three graduates Florence Gugin Eileen Haas and Verona Hebert the smallest class since 1925 The valedictorian and salutatorian were Verona Hobert and Eileen Haas Principal Burris and Supt Tiemens presented diplomas The commencement address was by Sugi R E Rawlins of Pierre with Rev J F Gugin giving the invocation Band glee club provided music.
Faulkton May 37 Special co workers of the agricultural and extension offices of Faulk County held a surprise shower at the home of Mr and Mrs Hugh Faulkner in honor of Mr and Wallace recently married. The evening was spent in games and gifts were presented to the honored couple. Guests included Mr and Mrs Amfleischer Mr and Mrs H A Kaller and daughter Joyer Mr and Mrs H A Faulkner and family Mellie McLoughlin Adolphine Mikley Wills Wilhelm Arlane Svac Velma Mowry Margate Meyar Huss Melville Light of Srook
Mrs Ed Shaw hosted the Ace of Clubs group in Wessington on a Thursday evening with extra guests Clark Andersen Mrs Grant GE Wayland and others. A two course lunch was served by Mrs Shaw and her daughter Mrs M C Eckert. The next meeting will be a picnic at St Lawrence.
The Goldenrod Extension Club met May 1 at the John Stafford home with 13 members and 3 visitors. Hostesses were Mrs. Stafford and Mrs. Joe Meyer. Members sang, shared household hints, and performed a play The Farm Outlook. Refreshments followed. June meeting to be at Mrs Alvin Eastburn with pot luck.
The Rev. J Weedell Walton, Spearfish Methodist minister and 1940 Spearfish Normal graduate, preached his own baccalaureate sermon as services were held in the first degree class since 1932. Walton earned a bachelor of science in education after studying at Southern Normal, Springfield, then Iowa Seminary before ordination and continued preaching while pursuing a degree at Spearfish Normal.
The Women's Foreign Missionary Society met in Tulare on May 27 with Mrs. Mary Willett leading a devotion on Good Citizenship and Neighborliness. Mrs. Trier and Mrs. Ethel Binger gave the lesson as several visitors attended. Lunch followed and the group planned a picnic for the next meeting.
Memorial Day events in Faulkton organized by Fen cannon Post American Legion and auxiliary will begin at 10 AM at the Legion Hall with A C Miller of Kennebec as speaker. A parade to the cemetery will follow then a car procession to Lambert Garage and on to Miranda for cemetery services.
Paulkton senior class presented The Absent Minded Professor to a capacity audience on Wednesday and Thursday evenings under the direction of Supt. W M Kemp. The performance drew favorable comment from attendees.

Elton Hollister son of Mr and Mrs Jay Hollister of Wessington Springs has completed the Civil Aeronautics training course at the School of Mines He will receive a pilot certificate and two hours credit toward graduation in June He will graduate with a bachelor of science in civil engineering
Lester Clarke of Wessington High School is named South Dakota Farmer at a state FFA meeting. He is the first from the school to receive the honor, with an emblem to be awarded at Brookings among 2000 students.
Tierence Olson and her sister Doris Olson returned from a two week visit with their parents Mr and Mrs Peter Olson of Wayland. Doris works at Hand County Bank in Miller and accompanied Tierence on the trip back to Denver California.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for Sylvia Jones 109 of Watertown South Dakota the state s oldest resident who died Wednesday night at home. The Rev W R Peterson of First Methodist Church officiated and burial was in Mt Hope Cemetery. She was 109 on April 15 and was the oldest registered voter and among the oldest in the United States.
Governor Bushfield urged South Dakotans to use more wholesome milk products in a proclamation designating June as dairy month. He cited milk and dairy foods as nutritionally valuable from youth to old age and described them as essential to daily nourishment.
The Rev. Henry N. Coray a China missionary gave an illustrated lecture on China in Bancroft town hall last Thursday afternoon. Coray will return to China after completing a Midwest speaking tour sponsored by the Foreign Missions of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
Wayland Springdale and Kornbough schools held exams last Thursday and Friday. Seven students from Wayland and Rombough participated with names including Korok Desa Boswell and Jack Carl. Eighth graders listed Rosemary Winegac Norma Baum Fern Rombough and Melvin Hollister. Sunday School Workers Conference hosted by Mr and Mrs R M Whitney at Lake Faulkton drew attendees including Belle.
