Army Mules Triple Trouble Lead New Guinea Drive

In New Guinea a crack transport unit, led by mule drivers including Private Michael A. Perlinsky of Los Angeles, works with mules named Triple Trouble and dynamite to haul heavy loads and outpace infantry. Mules walk four miles an hour, carry up to 950 pounds, and endure gunfire training as officers assess them as the army’s toughest transportation crew despite friction with air operations.

OPA Holds Line In Battle To Keep Rationing Program

Washington May 25 The Office of Price Administration defense of its rationing and pricing system faced sharp criticism from business figures and calls to strip its powers. Administrator Frentiss Brown urged continued funding for a $400 million subsidy program to lower meat butter and coffee prices and to expand inspectors and clerks. He denied mass resignations, noting resignations occur for policy reasons, while kitchen cabinet officials insisted the agency remains on the job. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill pushed reforms including a single agency to handle production prices and rationing, with some suggesting the War Food Administration as the best home for food control.
