Coal bids sought 60 000 tons for state institutions

Pierre May 22 bid by coal dealers for next winter’s supply of about 60 000 tons to state institutions. The fuel is to be purchased through the department of purchasing and finance.

Aviator hopeful Tondera questioned after Lindbergh visit

Robert Tonderea a 40 year old man identified as an aviator mechanic with an invention traveled from Mexico City to New York then to North Haven Maine and went to the Lindbergh estate area. He was taken by boat to Rockland for interrogation by Knox County Sheriff Frank S Harding. He arrived Monday with Deputy Ludwig under surveillance and left voluntarily for Rockland after spending time near the Morrow estate.

Weather halts air refueling test over Washington

Unfavorable weather blocked the army air refueling experiment over the East Coast. A Wright Field bomber failed to complete the non stop round trip to New York Atlantic City and back, landing at Bolling Field with fuel still in tanks. Grounded overnight pending further instructions, with plans for a future refueling test. Purbach published the first printed almanac in Vienna in 1457 titled Pro Pluribus Annis.

Rapid City seeks municipal lake project west of city

Civic groups on Tuesday night backed a plan to reestablish a municipally owned lake in Rapid Canyon four miles west of Rapid City. The 112 acre lake would include a children's playground and pavilion with an earth dam and concrete core. J E Kirkham, former state bridge engineer, recommended the dam design.

Wool Growers to Hold 1929 Clip for Higher Prices

Wellington Springs May 22 Special The Jerauld County Wool Growers association voted to hold their 1929 wool clip for higher prices. Bidders offered lower prices than last year while pooled wool brought 40 1/2 cents per pound. Members chose to wait for better prices rather than sell individually. Great Battle Looms in China

Nationalist forces move north to meet Feng Yu-hsiang and bar his South China advance. Nanking authorities denounce Feng and push peace as unity remains the aim. Estimates place 120000 troops heading from Pukow to Tientsin with another 130000 from Hankow toward Honan. Feng’s forces are said to total 200000 along the Lunghi railway and river regions. U S gunboat Tulsa sent to Swatow to protect American interests after clashes near Canton.

Free Circus On At Miller Tonight

A large crowd was expected in Miller for a free circus show organized by local business leaders. Booster day events were planned with merchants promoting the fundraiser and entertainment for residents. Nick Caspers from the South Dakota Attala Growers association and West South Dakota Farm Bureau executive was in Huron en route home from a tour through Wisconsin.

Rushmore Sculptor to Return. Work Resumes on Memorial

Gutzon Borglum, the Mt. Rushmore sculptor, will arrive in Keystone within two months to resume carving the four presidents Washington Lincoln Roosevelt and Jefferson. The studio at the mountain base will be finished, enabling winter work under shelter. The 465 foot figures will crown the granite peak with a total project cost around 500000 and an 80 by 120 foot antechamber carved beside.

Coyne Weakens Further as Hospital Reportsturned

May 22 report notes Lieutenant Coyne’s condition unchanged but progressively weaker. He slept fairly well though coughing persisted and nourishment is via glucose infusion. physicians say vitality waned yesterday. Penny Removed From Throat of Shirley DeGeest

A two year old girl Shirley DeGeest of 485 Sixth Street Southwest swallowed a penny that belonged to her sister Beverly. Doctors removed the coin under ether with forceps using a fluroscope and the child, aside from a sore throat, resumed play within hours.
