Des Moines area reels from severe hailstorm damage
A historic hail storm battered a community yesterday, smashing 20 schoolhouse windows and destroying gardens while leaving many residences with broken lights. Ground was covered in hail two feet deep in places, and two inches of rain accompanied the storm that began at 3 07 p m and lasted ten minutes. Insurance covered the property losses. Some farmers doubt grain will recover as it was in early development. The storm swept in from the northwest with high winds and heavy rainfall, part of a broader statewide weather outbreak causing outages and a tornado elsewhere.
