Los Angeles police launched a major manhunt after Herbert Spencer editor of a crime exposing magazine and his ally Charles Crawford wealthy politician were shot in Crawford’s office by an unidentified attacker. Crawford died hours later. Spencer was killed instantly. Detectives chased a “swarthy man” about 35, heavy build, tied to underworld reprisals.

Vote on Reserve Bank director ballots in Minneba banks
Banks in the district have received ballots for the election of a new Federal Reserve Bank director in Minneba. Voting closes June 3, with George C Faallinwiser on a committee backing H R Kibbee of Mitchell. Kibbee’s committee sent circulars to voting banks urging his election to replace the late J C Bassett of Aberdeen. Kibbee was nominated at a meeting last Sunday by bankers representing 23 of the 41 voting bank members in South Dakota.

Two Killed When Car Hits Engine At Crossing
MONDAMIN IOWA May 21 Two young women identified as Mrs Marie Jefferson and Mrs Bennett Spuzell died instantly when an automobile at high speed struck a locomotive at the 9 crossing in Mandamin. Two men, Ray Beker and Clyde Benting, were severely injured and taken to an Omaha hospital. Postmaster John Ciutts witnessed the crash and said the car was traveling about 50 miles an hour.

Britton Women Injured in Chicago Crash

Chicago May 21. Complaint for divorce filed by Margaret Row Gordon of Evanston Illinois says her husband Roland broke a promise to pay her fifty dollars for every time he struck her. She testified the four month later assault occurred with a golf ball during a foursome at Eagle Rock Wisconsin. Circuit Judge Daniel P. Trude granted a decree to Mrs Gordon.

New York May 21 A separation suit filed by Mrs Josephine Garrett McNamee against radio announcer Graham McNamee was disclosed today in supreme court. Death of Inventor After Blast In Philadelphia Workshop

Parties settle in injury case at industrial hearing
A settlement was reached in one injury case while another action before Industrial Commissioner D R Perkins awaits a decision. Fred C Miller, who broke both heels in a fall from a scaffold at Armour packing plant, agreed to a 1550 cash settlement after testimony, already receiving 501 for loss of time. A transcript will be prepared in Milton G Sharpe v Armour, with a decision expected in 2 3 weeks. Sharpe lost part of his left hand and eight weeks of work after a circular saw incident at the plant where he was in charge of the screen house. Armour contends Sharpe was using the saw for personal use after hours. Sharpe now works for Chicago North Western Railway and seeks 1331 in compensation.

Florida to Legalize Track Gambling in State
Tallahassee Fla May 21 Proponents of legalized track gambling today had a bill almost ready for presentation to Governor Doyle E Carlson. The state house passed by 55 to 38 a measure to legalize racing and pari mutuel wagering amid vigorous opposition led by a woman representative. Five amendments were attached and must meet senate approval before reaching the governor, whose attitude remains unclear.

First Woman Graduate Of Yankton Is Dead
Dr. Alice Kingsbury, oldest Yankton college faculty member and the first woman graduate, died at a Battle Creek sanitorium after a yearlong illness. Known on campus as the sweetheart of Yankton college, she earned her degree in 1890 as the lone member of her class. Secretary E H Myers traveled to Michigan to bring the body back.
