Customs Officers Rescue Bootlegger in Hudson Arrests
New York customs officers rescued bootlegger Michael Dillon after his boat overturned in the Hudson. Two officers jumped in to save him and later dried him on the dock before pouring liquor from his cargo down his throat. Dillon and two companions were pursued for suspected liquor cargoes. Durey Grocery opens today at 185 Third Street Southwest in the former Culhane Dairy Depot building. A remodeling drive added a meat department and refrigeration plant. Aged Walker Weston Dies After Marble Long Walk
Edward Payson Weston, 90, famed long distance pedestrian, died yesterday in Brooklyn after a life of feats including a 8,895 mile 104 day walk from New York to San Francisco at age 70. He spent his final years as an invalid in a wheelchair supported by Anne Nichols trust funds and secretary Anne O Eagan. Weston served as a Union Army spy in the Civil War and later worked for the New York Herald before his fame as a world renowned walker.
