Move to Slice Horton's Term

Pierre May 11. Commutation of sentence from five to two and a half years for Fred Horton from Hutchinson county was recommended to Governor Bulow by the state pardon board at its May meeting. Nine of the few applications were refused. Horton was convicted of first degree robbery and sentenced in February 1928 to the penitentiary. The board noted his good prison record and that Judge Beck believed he could be reclaimed if given another chance. The record also cited witness David Wipt and statements by William Shenk and Clair L. Kints supporting commutation as beneficial to all parties.

Farmers adopt big-hitch plan for driving multiple horses

Prosecution Aims at Cigarette Tax Evasion in South Dakota

May 11 statement by O Ronayne, director of the division of inspections, state department of agriculture, warns against groups banding to purchase cigarettes outside the state to dodge the cigarette stamp tax. He says the tax, imposed by the legislature, seeks to relieve landowners from high assessments, noting most cigarettes in the state are used by certain people.

The speaker asserts that buyers and sellers of cigarets outside the state to evade tax are conspiring to defraud the state. He claims they violate Section 6 of the cigaret law and warns that prosecutions will be instituted to enforce tax collection on cigarets sold within the state.

Check plots in fertilizer use in Clay county

May 11. Farmers Will again carry on tests this year to determine the value of phosphate fertilizer on soils. An accurate check of last year’s plots shows corn yield increased from two to fourteen bushels per acre and earlier maturity may follow. This year carry over effects will be noted on plots treated last year and new plots added to obtain data on various commercial fertilizers. The 1929 plots range from two to fifteen acres and include alfalfa and corn.

Seek Relatives Of Vermillion Death by Own Action

Vermillion officials search for relatives of Carl Knutson who hanged himself near a rural school yesterday morning. Papers show he was a Norway native, formerly of Fort Dodge Iowa, drafted from Humboldt County Iowa, with a 1920 Norway trip. A Chicago brothel address could not be traced. A letter from a Norwegian bank receiver noted a loss of money. He had worked for a local farmer but quit Wednesday morning. An uncashed paycheck was found on him.

Favor Poultry On Miner Farms In Howard County

Minor county women expand poultry flocks this year reports county extension agent W. Jones. Igilie Older of Carthage hatches nearly 2000 chicks, leading a 4-H poultry club with prior success. Mrs Moses Thomas and Mrs David Thomas of Fedora each plan or have 1000 chicks from incubators or hatcheries. Mrs Jacobsen, starting first chick-raising, hatches about 900 chicks. Similar increases noted across the county as extension cooperates with women.

A state college extension service promotes the grow-healthy chicks plan to prevent disease. Thirty Minor county women participated last year and reported good results in preventing worms and tuberculosis.
