American aviators Dick Merrill and Jack Tambie landed at Croydon airdrome at 6:38 p.m. local time completing the eastward leg of a trans oceanic flight. They stopped at North Weald for radio repairs, then flew 41 hours two minutes from Floyd Bennett Field. A large crowd welcomed them as they planned to photograph coronation day and return to New York by Wednesday.

PIERRE May 10 The South Dakota Department of Justice and Public Safety faces a shutdown as Attorney General Clair Roddewig prepares to contest a Supreme Court writ obtained by Governor Leslie Jensen. The order bars spending on operation and maintenance, halting liquor, cigarette, motor vehicle and inspection law enforcement and investigations. Roddewig vows cooperation with state and county officials while seeking modification to permit limited activity.
The Agriculture Department said the 1936 winter wheat crop indicated by May 1 conditions would total 564,295,000 bushels, down from 656,019,000 a month earlier. Rye production is placed at 42,913,000 bushels, with a rye condition of 78.4 percent of normal on May 4. Acreage sown last fall was 7,673,000 acres, with 4,082,000 remaining for harvest.
