Leslie Lewis and Muller, students at Huron College, win run off after regular balloting left two top candidates short of a majority. Lewis, set to finish his four year course next year, is active in multiple school activities. Wright of Huron was the opponent defeated in the run off during the year 1337 38.
Leslie Lewis defeated Bill Wright in a runoff to win the 1937 38 student president post at Huron College after a six week campaign. Four candidates started the race and Thursday votes showed Wright 98 to Lewis 7. the runoff tally was 112 to 10 in favor of Lewis.
Rain in Huron drenches towns gardens and seeded grain with a night of soaking precipitation boosting the yearly total to 1.30 inches and 6.46 inches for 1931. forecaster B R Laskowski says fair tonight with a shower likely and warmer Sunday as clearing skies follow.
Pierre May 8 The South Dakota supreme court issued a temporary order barring the state department of justice and public safety from spending funds pending a decision on the constitutionality of the 1935 act creating a law enforcement fund. Governor Leslie Jensen and others challenge the law’s provisions and the writ calls for show cause by June 4. The ruling blocks salaries and expenses of the department and targets officials including State Auditor Ray Kelly and State Treasurer W H Hinsehman.
Hollywood reports a growing threat of a strike by high salaried stars joining makeup artists and other craft unions. The Screen Actors Guild polled 99 percent in favor of striking if demands are unmet, with 78 percent needed for action. Federation leaders warned of theater picketing and boycotts in major cities by Monday if labor requests aren’t addressed.
Ernst Lehmann, captain of the Hindenburg, died after being severely burned while insisting there would be a future Zeppelin voyage. Even in oxygen and pain he spoke of returning with non explosive helium, remaining hopeful and resolute about flying again. His nurse recalled his calm, cheerful demeanor and unwavering belief in zeppelin travel.
Berlin reports Germany orders rapid work on a sister ship to the Hindenburg while Graf Eckener says no further trips until the disaster is cleared up. Officials push LZ-130 construction at Friedrichshafen and aim for Europe to North America service within three months.
Three thousand more refugees depart Bilbao aboard three French freighters bound for Bordeaux. A convoy of French warships protects the ships from insurgent attack. Earlier this week over 280 refugees were moved to French villages. authorities aim to relocate about 300,000 civilians before siege artillery reaches fringe areas. Basque defenders fight near Mount Sollube as insurgents press the eastern, northern, and southern lines. Planes drop explosives on Basque villages and concentrations, causing civilian casualties.
The Navy ordered a court of inquiry at Lakehurst to probe the Hindenburg disaster with 35 feared dead and many injured. Officials rushed to assemble witnesses for public hearings as Germany presses on with the new LZ-130 liner, while survivors and experts weigh ignition and sabotage theories.
