Urge Purchase Of S. D. Cement
SIOUX FALLS May 9 Urging the federal government to negotiate for the purchase of 3 500 000 barrels of cement manufactured at the South Dakota state cement plant Rapid City BF Brownell Sioux Falls yesterday sent a telegram to Harold L Ickes secretary of the interior A copy of the telegram was sent to Gov Tom Berry together with a suggestion that the governor invite the national government to consider plans for contracting for this large quantity of cements to be used on the Boulder dam project Brownell pointed out that if the federal government would contract with South Dakota for the purchase of 3 500 000 barrels of cement for this work it would mean a tremendous aid to employment giving work to hundreds of men and would place the plant on a 24 hour operating schedule The action followed a statement by Secretary Ickes charging collusion among cement manufacturers and that contract prices quoted were exorbitant.
