Hog prices likely to rise further says bureau report

Brookings March 31. The bureau of agricultural economics says hog prices may continue rising if consumer demand does not fall, despite a prior long decline. A seasonal drop in slaughter supplies supports higher prices, with lighter hogs showing margins and heavier weights marketed. If May and June pig numbers stay normal, a stronger summer hog market appears likely. Cattle supplies stay tight in March and April with potential temporary gains for better grade steers, but overall price declines began in January and February, reaching lows not seen since 1822, unless demand recovers.
