Governor Signs Chain Store Tax in Plan to Replace Gross Income Tax
Pierre March 15. Governor Berry signed the chain store and sales tax bills set to take effect July 1, replacing the expiring gross income tax. The new law taxes income from 1 to 8 percent and sales at 2 percent, with wholesale and retail firms taxed on volume at 1/8 to 3/4 percent. The measure consolidates stores under one owner, lifting some chains into higher brackets and may face court challenges. Berry also signed about 40 other bills, ranging from highway procedures to state park land conveyances and state budget items.
