Roosevelt gains Senate grip via guarded relief votes
Washington March 20 The process by which President Roosevelt regained his grip on the Senate has been guarded as a state secret. Six senators who switched their votes to him on relief offer few explanations. Some say nothing while others give insufficient reasons. Cloakroom belief is that Roosevelt shared a few hidden slices of political pie. A senator privately told tabor lobbyists that they must work with him for two more years and cannot repudiate him now. They fear little from this Congress if he stays prudent on wage matters. Many expect prevailing wages in twenty two states and continued discretion on federal projects to avoid harming private wages.
