The House approved the Cullen 3.2 per cent beer bill and sent it to the Senate as President Roosevelt urged Congress to legalize non intoxicating beer for revenue. Prohibitionists opposed but the vote reflected a momentum toward beer regulation and budget balancing.
Pierre March 14 J T McCullen of Huron was appointed assistant attorney general by Walter Conway. The move keeps McCullen tied to Beadle County politics while he likely relocates to Pierre during his tenure. Born 1902 in St Lawrence he trained at Miller High School, University of Minnesota, and University of South Dakota Law School before practicing in Miller. McCullen previously served as admin house leader and legal adviser to Gov. Bulow in 1927.
The League of Women Voters sponsors an open meeting Friday afternoon March 17 at 4 o clock in the farmers assembly room at the courthouse. W C Botkin secretary of the South Dakota Retail Merchants Association will discuss the Gross Income Tax law and H M Whismen will speak on school taxes detailing the source and disposition of school tax funds. An open forum will follow for questions and discussion and all citizens both men and women are urged to attend.
Washington March 24 The Treasury will begin at midnight tomorrow to assess expected revenue from the new income tax laws. First returns for 1932 become overdue, with exemptions set at 1000 for singles and 2500 for married filers plus 400 per child. The federal levy starts at 4 percent on the first 4000 above exemptions and rises to 8 percent above that with graduated rates beginning at six thousand.

In Long Beach California on March 1 a puzzle purchased by H V J Swain collapsed minutes after starting. Swain began at about 9 o clock Friday and says the solution broke apart repeatedly as the quake rattled the pieces. He has spent three days on it with little progress.
President Roosevelt discussed an emergency farm relief bill with Senators Smith of South Carolina and Jones of Texas. Leaders indicated a one year experimental crop control proposal may be drafted and could be moved forward soon if Congress has not adjourned.
Beadle County Farm Holiday association and Huron Lions club unanimously back a Washington farm relief bill led by W. R. Ronald of Mitchell. Telegrams were sent to Secretary Wallace and President Roosevelt urging fast action. Dr CS Betts praised the associations and urged endorsement, while Kiwanis member Chester White invited Lions and wives to a joint club meeting with Jules attending.

About 100 of South Dakota’s 160 state banks slated to reopen tomorrow after Governor Perry declared a banking holiday on March 4. A gravel worker was injured while county crews operated a graveling job near De Smet on March 1. Details are incomplete. no further information on the condition or exact location was provided in the report.
Minneapolis Mar 14 Fifty five banks in the Ninth Federal Reserve district were authorized to reopen immediately by Gov. W B Geery. Ten Minneapolis banks under national charter reopened yesterday. The total of 65 of 547 Fed reserve banks in the district include Minnesota the Dakotas Montana northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan. The banks listed have active clearing house associations and are in district headquarters cities. South Dakota banks reopened include Aberdeen National Bank and Trust Co First National Bank Sioux Falls Citizens National Bank and Trust Co First National Bank and Trust Co Security National Bank and Trust Co Yankton First Dakota National Bank.
Aberdeen residents returned to regular banking today as two banks resumed operations under federal authorization. Deposits vastly outpaced withdrawals with many new accounts opened. Checking withdrawals mainly paid bills from the holiday period. savings withdrawals were minimal. Business activity revived as merchants cleared ten day backlogs and ads resumed.
Chicago officials report the reopening of three Sioux City banks as the banking sector resumes normal operations. The Chicago Federal Reserve lists institutions cleared to reopen in the Seventh District, with banks in five states now allowed to resume business.
