South Dakota presses reforms to speed trials and rehab efforts

A slate of measures would improve court efficiency and criminal rehabilitation. Proposals include suspending sentences for first-time offenders, liberalizing parole, and easing jurisdiction limits. Supporters claim quicker settlements in minor cases will reduce circuit court crowding and aid prosecutions notably in livestock theft cases. Emergency clauses made these laws effective upon executive approval.

Manchester Couple Announce Marriage in Flandreau

Elmer Harvey and Inex Fulmer were quietly married in Flandreau several months ago, with the bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Fulmer and a Lincoln school teacher for two years, and the groom, a younger son of E. E. Harvey, a prominent farmer south of Manchester.

Old Harrold Landmark Replaced by New Amusement Hall

Harrold SD March news notes the old Harrold hotel is torn down and replaced by a 50 by 90 foot amusement hall with a 3 by 70 foot dance floor. Opening festivities include a St Patrick’s dance on March 17 and two bowling alleys will be included for spectator use.

Yale Declamatory Contest Winners Named

Yale students from the dramatic, humorous and oratorical sections were selected to advance to the district contest in Huron. Participants include LeNom Vondracek Effie Foote Marie Kuehl Ear Marsh Bertha Walz Elaine O’Brien Lloyd Gribble Irma Vondracek and Johnny Hofer from Yale Community church Friday March 13 with one member from each section advancing.

Noted Educators To Speak At Aberdeen

Prominent educators will address the spring education conference at Northern State Teachers college in Aberdeen on March 20 and 21. Speakers include Prof. W. C. Reavis of the University of Chicago and President W. C. Swain of Mayville State Teachers College, discussing room supervision and rural school administration. State officials R. W. Kraushaar and N. E. Steele will participate in the program.

League Of Nations Miniature Assembly Planned In Sioux Falls

Under Augustana college history department guidance students from seven South Dakota colleges plan a two day League of Nations model assembly March 27 and 28 at First Lutheran church Sioux Falls. Delegates from Southern Normal Dakota Wesleyan and Sioux Falls college will discuss international problems patterned after the Geneva session later in the spring.
