Huron Chamber Elects Fahrendorf President At Banquet

G B Fahrendorf, manager of the J C Penney store in Huron, was elected president of the Huron Chamber of Commerce at its annual meeting. More than 300 attended the banquet, where speakers expressed optimism for the chamber’s upcoming year and heard a Russia discussion by Henry G Zavoral of Minneapolis.

Pickus Evidence Is Not Admitted In Webster Trial

In Webster S D defense attempts to show extra work and materials were used on Brown County bridges were barred by Judge James McNenny. The trial of Herman Pickus Aberdeen contractor charged with obtaining county funds under false pretense focused on concrete and steel shortages rather than extra work. The jury was excused as the ruling sparked argument between counsel. Eight witnesses testified for Pickus including claims he resided in Aberdeen in early 1931 and that the defense sought to use the Lane signed exhibits from the Hecla bridge to affect the indictment.

Taxpayers Of S D Plan Organization At Huron Session

Delegations from 11 South Dakota counties met in Watertown and voted to hold a state wide gathering in Huron on March 21 to organize the South Dakota Just Tax union. Mark W Sheffer Watertown served as chairman with A J Hawkins as secretary. The district meeting drew about 300 attendees and urged moving the state motor vehicle fund into county general funds. Speakers condemned the public instruction department over school curriculum changes and a committee was named to study the course and report in Huron. The group authorized forming articles of incorporation and by laws for submission at Huron. Delegations to Huron may include three taxpayers per county from existing groups or a mass meeting, but no delegates who hold state or county office.
