Crop Prospects in South Dakota and Plains States
The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis noted May to early June crop prospects in South Dakota and the Ninth District were the best among major crops, though uneven conditions arose from excess rain in parts of the region. Milk prices fell to 31 cents a pound in May, the lowest since 1822, while egg production surged in spring. Livestock prices slipped year over year amid reduced purchasing power, and grain marketings remained low. Banking activity showed reduced debits, smaller country check clearings, but higher loan and deposit activity in city banks due to real estate payments and public funds flows.
