Agriculture Secretary Sees Good Crop Despite Grasshoppers
Pierre June 2 Practically no poisoning of livestock has resulted from the grasshopper eradication program as the 1938 formula for paste bait uses sawdust. Secretary Gordon Stout says birds are not attracted to sawdust and grasshoppers are not picky. He notes favorable growing conditions bode well for the small grain harvest in three to four weeks, despite infestations. He praises inexpensive machine designs for bait distribution and cites an emergency device used near Mitchell that repurposes an endgate broadcasters to drop bait, enabling a farmer to cover large areas quickly.
