Flushing device advised to protect nesting birds in alfalfa fields
Pierre June 23 A simple flushing device is recommended to protect ground nesting birds during alfalfa mowing. State game and fish director O H Johnson says a light willow pole with cloth suspends above the sickle path to flush birds and allow the mower to lift the bar slightly. If a few inches of hay remain nest sites can be avoided, especially in the west river where pheasants were introduced. The device aims to reduce bird injuries across farms statewide.
