Production of Herds Show Efficiency Over Size
Sioux Falls reports from the Minnesota cow testing association indicate dairy profitability hinges on cow producing ability rather than herd size. In Halvorson’s eight cow herd, feed costs rose 4.63 less per cow than in a 14 cow herd, yet net returns above feed cost were 12.63 higher for the smaller herd. The dairyman emphasizes purebred sires and culling low producers, noting last year’s average butterfat of 844 pounds with potential to reach 500 pounds per cow in two years through better feeding and breeding.
