Chinese Elms Need Care Now for Planting Success

Ardmore June 22. Oscar Mathews director of the U S agricultural experimental station at Ardmore advises extra care for recently planted Chinese elm trees to cut summer mortality. He says the Chinese elm is hardy and fast growing but requires weed-free soil and careful, not fine mulching, with root systems pruned at planting to establish. Fall River county farmers bought Chinese elm seedlings at cost from a Hot Springs merchant.

Burbank farmer reports freak calf born without tail backbone

John J Brunner of Burbank reveals a black cow bore a calf with no tail and no backbone, ending at hips, four inches shorter than normal. The jet black, active calf has been nicknamed Oock while Brunner notes the cow has produced five other normal calves.

Rapid City June 22 Hardley Ham of Spring Creek ranch and J Rapid of Rapid City used an airplane charter from Rapid K Lines Inc to travel to a ranch 25 miles east of Rapid City. They conducted a cattle transaction quickly and returned home, illustrating a new use for air travel in ranching.

Increased Power At KFDY On July First

Brookings June 22 The increased power of 1000 watts for the state college radio station KFDY will be tested soon after July 1 declarations by Dr H M Crothers dean of engineering who oversees the station. He noted delays in obtaining extra equipment and possible additional time to adjust it for broadcasting while hoping for a smooth transition similar to the earlier 500 watt increase three years ago.

Church Convention Draws Three States to Camp Meeting

Rapid City reports the Church of God annual state camp meeting opening June 28 and closing June 30. Represented will be churches from South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wyoming with 1000 to 1500 attendees. Speakers include Rev. C. E. Bright and Mrs. Bright from Pratt Kansas and ministers from various state churches. Alfalfa Palace fair grounds serves as headquarters.
