Explosion Burns Submarine Crew at Cherbourg
In Cherbourg on June 2 1941 a battery room explosion aboard the French submarine Aziane burned a dozen sailors. Three were badly hurt but not believed to be fatally injured. Hydrogen buildup in the batteries caused the blast as the 600 ton vessel prepared to leave the canal station after overhauls. The hospitalized men included the chief electrician and two battery assistants.
