Floyd Short Freed After 45 Minute Murder Acquittal

BUFFALO June 2 A Harding county circuit court jury acquitted Floyd Short Lemmon deputy state sheriff of murder after a 45 minute deliberation. The case stemmed from a November incident at Slim Buttes ranch when a posse shot Wayne Kelley who reached for his irons as he tried to flee. The trial before Judge W F Eddy began Tuesday noon.

Nautilus Faces Ongoing Dangers. Tow by Wyoming

The polar submarine Nautilus, damaged and dead engines, awaits repair 240 miles from Queenstown as battleship Wyoming tows it. Trouble includes fuel oil and air compressors, damaged engines, and loss of steering gear. Sir Hubert Wilkins planned the Spitzbergen leg en route to the north pole, with the June 4 Provincetown start described as highly hazardous.

Huron De Molays Conclude South Dakota Conclave

The ninth South Dakota conclave of the Order of DeMolay closes today in Pierre. Morning business sessions precede officer elections this afternoon. Frank I. Buckingham of Kansas City spoke, and Forrest Houston Baxter of Watertown, nephew of Gov. Warren Green, will receive the Legion of Honor degree. The convention ends with a banquet and dance at the Masonic temple.

South Dakotan Killed in Lincoln Auto Crash

In Lincoln Nebraska last night H E Merkel 27 of Glenham South Dakota died after an auto he rode in collided with a car driven by A Richardson of Lincoln The crash occurred ten miles west of Lincoln Miss Mary Belle Huffman of Lincoln and Mrs J S Shaw of Columbus along with Shaw's seven year old son George were injured Merkel and Huffman were summer school students at the University of Nebraska.

Aberdeen Man Clyde Bowman Suicide After Bank Job Loss

The body of Clyde Bowman, 55, formerly of Aberdeen National Bank, was found four miles east of Aberdeen with a bullet wound. A coroner's jury ruled suicide, citing despondency over losing his teller position after nearly three years. He was found with a recently purchased cheap revolver in his hand. The sole known survivor is his other relative.

Radio Commission Orders Explanations From Stations

The Federal Radio Commission demanded explanations from more than a dozen broadcasting stations for alleged rule violations. Licenses were renewed temporarily while hearings are set for each station, with KGOW Mandan and WNDB supposed violated the 12 hour rule, along with KGDA Mitchell South Dakota.

Inspection at Camp Rapid Marks First Week of Encampment

Inspection of guns equipment and tents was held at the national guard camp marking the start of the annual 15 day encampment. Governor Warren E Green and party visited Camp Rapid yesterday. The electric locomotive first came into use about 1885.

Trans Atlantic Hop Planned From Harbor Grace

Flying photographer Otto Hillig and Danish immigrant Holger Hoiris prepared for a 3100 mile ocean hop from Harbor Grace Newfoundland to Denmark via Ireland England the Netherlands and Copenhagen. Their plane Liberty carries 600 gallons of fuel for up to 82 hours in air with a cruising speed of 110 mph.

Melvin Dukes of 175 Idaho avenue southeast and F Sarahan of 12 Beach avenue southeast pleaded guilty before Municipal Judge Dick Haney this morning. Chief Hopkins said Huron police will keep enforcing tickets to curb excessive speed and endangerment on the roads.

Skeleton believed to be missing Nebraska sheriff found near trail

Lewistown Montana officers said a skeleton uncovered beneath stones near the 7% trail likely belongs to John Afflerbach, former York Nebraska sheriff who disappeared in April 1918 while escorting Harry Randolph to York to face motor car theft charges. Sheriff Guy Tullock and Coroner C W Wilder attributed the find as a key clue in the 15 year old case.

Coursey Installed As New Commander

Major O W Coursey of Mitchell was installed as commander of the South Dakota department of United Spanish War Veterans at the encampment closing. New officers include senior vice commander Thomas S Owen of Hot Springs and junior vice commander Delbert Wilmarth of Huron with a full slate for the department and auxiliary leadership named across several cities.
