Planning Board Findings On Land Ownership Shifts In South Dakota
Brookings, June 15. A survey by the South Dakota state planning board and the Works Progress Administration shows land ownership moving away from individuals toward banks, insurance companies, rural credit boards and counties. The 125 page report will publish January 1, 1938 figures and compare with 1934. Individual ownership dropped 8.2 percentage points since 1934, from 66.8 percent to 58.6 percent. Bank and mortgage company holdings fell 0.9 percent. Insurance companies gained 2 percent through foreclosures, with counties also acquiring substantial land via tax deeds. The rural credit board rose about 1 percent, mainly through foreclosures. Public land accounted for 2.6 percent and corporation land for 9.2 percent in January, down from 23.9 percent in 1934. Indian and state park lands showed no change.
