Counties Begin Park Movement in South Dakota
In Brookings on June 12 state extension forester Frank I. Rockwell announced plans for a county parks system. Union and Bon Homme counties started park development under a 1835 park law, with WPA help and site acquisitions. Bon Homme near Tyndall will include a log cabin, fair buildings, and forest clearance for timber. Union plans a 40 acre tract near Sgink, with an artificial lake and a community building, plus plantings of native trees and hedges. Mount Vernon in Davison County also began park work, purchasing a block for the park and planting trees. The program, promoted by the State Planning Board, authorizes county park spending and site condemnation.
