Moose Convention Weekend Planned In Huron Diocese

The Loyal Order of Moose state convention and its Women of the Moose auxiliary gather in Huron next Sunday June 9 with morning breakfast at Marvin Hughitt Hotel and joint banquet at 6 30 pm. Events include separate afternoon sessions 2 pm and 3 pm, welcomes from city and chamber officials, officer elections and a 3 pm roundtable. Regional director N R Smith will speak at the banquet with musical performances by local students and a prayer to begin the event.

New Depot Agent Arrives at Willow Lake

William Engel of Golf North Dakota arrived Monday to assume his position as depot agent for the Great Northern Railway at Willow Lake.

Idle Land Grasshopper Program spreads in Sanborn County

Sanborn County joins the Idle Land Grasshopper Program for 1940. County Agent Fred E. Larson announces immediate spreading of idle land and roadsides to cover all land. Sam Meyers Frederick will supervise, with Dean Stanfield operating a roadside spreader and Clarence Butler in charge of the Woonsocket mixing station. Several farmers report good bait kills and warn that most eggs have not hatched yet. The only sure control is spreading bait on heavily infested areas every two weeks.

Close Of Bible School Observed At Church Of Christ

Special program marked the end of a daily vacation Bible school at the Church of Christ in Wellington. Mrs. Henry Muhs led the school with assistants Elizabeth and Genevieve DeHaven, featuring songs recitations and Bible verses learned during the week.

Religious Education Council meets at Lake Preston

Rain did not dampen a well attended meeting Tuesday at the Congregational Church of the Kingsbury County Council of Religious Education in Lake Preston. Devotionals were led by Misa Susie Smith and Rev A S Palmer. The program featured talks by Mrs Marvin Johnson, Mrs Frank Davis, Mrs Russell Way, Miss Geyer, Mrs Riddle, Dr Grove, H A Sturges on temperance, and a main address by G G Bell of Haron. A young people rally occurred at six o'clock.

Series of Accidents Hit Ree Heights This Month

Ree Heights reports a string of injuries with three women slipping on Saturday evenings. Mrs. Tom Hickcox broke an arm, Mrs. Robert Henson fractured a finger and hand, and Mrs. August Hadeler broke her arm while tending chicken coops. Hadeler was aided by neighbors and taken to Miller hospital.

Dog Aids Farmer After Tractor Traps Him

Ree Heights report details farmer Ben Iverson who was pinned under a tractor when it overturned. His nephew John Iverson and a faithful dog ultimately drew help as the dog repeatedly barked, allowing the nephew to lift the machine and free the driver with no serious injuries.

Keep America's Young Men Out of War Week Planned

Sioux Falls and six other South Dakota cities will observe June 11 to 23 as Keep America's Young Men Out of War Week. Gardner Ompson, state president, announced, noting local junior chambers will conduct programs during the period. The statewide event aligns with the U S Junior Chamber agenda which marks Defense Day on June 20.

Sale of 8 563 Acres S D Land Near Pierre

Director Millard Scott said the rural credit dept accepted 31 offers on 8 583 acres at an average 5.97 an acre, rejected 10 on east river land, with 4 619 west river and 3 945 east river included in the 51 095 sale. Five offers were deferred and a portion involved west river land.

Inaugurate Weed Control Program In Lar son Says

County Agent Larson outlines weed control options for noxious plants including creeping Jenny and other weeds. Duckfooting every two weeks for one or two summers can build soil at seven fifty nine per acre with AAA cooperators. For small patches chemical control via sodium chlorate is cheapest, with dry and wet application methods. Dry is now seen as equally effective and cheaper. spray requires two to three applications when flowers are green. September is suitable for dry work. remove trash for even coverage. Four pounds per square rod is the suggested rate. Several farmers plan orders to save freight, and control should target small patches. Weonsocket visitors report countywide weed control inaugurated with townships, county, and state cooperation, and railroad involvement. Farmers using tillage include Judy, Suelflow, Letcher, Andersen, and Shafranek. Glycerine aids frost protection during duckfoot cultivation.

De Smet Publisher Re-elected Alumni Association President

BahVUXINGS June G6 Leo Lippert of Sioux Falls was re elected president of the South Dakota State College Alumni Association at the annual meeting on commencement day. Officers named were Aubrey Sherwood De Smet publisher vice president Tom Hagear Watertown second vice president and D B Doner State College registrar secretary treasurer. One hundred seventy alumni registered in the Student Union Sunday and Monday. Regents attended the alumni dinner and spoke. Lippert Doner and Ross Davies Brookings were named to the Alumni Association Student Union committee to cooperate with the Student Association and college authorities.

Chester Top Completes Master’s Degree at Illinois

Wellington June 6 Special Chester Top arrived for vacation at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs W A Topp. He completed work on his master’s degree at the University of Illinois this spring and has been awarded a fellowship to continue toward a PhD at the same university.
