Dade Tree 94 Still Bearing in Thonotosassa Florida

In Thonotosassa Florida a 94 year old orange tree known as the Dade tree remains vigorous and fruitful. The tree, planted from seeds of Cuban oranges dropped by Maj. Francis Dade during his 1835 march, once produced about 16 000 oranges annually before the 1885 freeze. Major Dade, his 110 men, and a small relief expedition faced an ambush near present Dade City en route to Fort King. A marble shaft honors Dade at West Point. The living tree stands about 60 feet tall with a 56 foot limb spread and a trunk circumference of about 0 inches.
