South Dakota crops brightened by rains despite insect threat
Weather in the week brought heavy rains across most of South Dakota, lifting crop prospects and moisture. Early corn up for first cultivation in the southeast, rye heading, and orchards seeing some insect pressure from cutworms. Western areas remained drier with replanting needed in spots. temperatures ranged from 70s to near 100 in the span, with showers totaling 1 to 2 inches in most regions. Federal statistician E V Jones called rains valuable for agriculture, boosting moisture reserves and saving crops and pastures on the verge of deterioration.
