South Dakota Highway Plans Depend On Federal Funds

Pierre June 1 South Dakota highway officials say work could begin soon if the $3,000,000 share of a proposed $400,000,000 federal road program is approved. Plans and specs are ready for a surge in paving and oil surfacing, with bridges needed and existing unobligated funds of about $400,000 expected for use. Bids for about $40,000 of road work were received April 4 but contracts await funds and possible cancellation remains.

Lake Preston Hosts Winfred Group in Church Social

The Young People's society of Winfred joined the 4-L society of Lake Preston at the Congregational church for an informal supper at 6:30 PM and a program led by Miss Rosemore on preventing child labor. The event was a reciprocal visit following a fall meeting when Lake Preston hosted Winfred and helped organize their sister society.

Lake Preston Youth Struck by Swing in Accident

Lake Preston reports a narrow injury when a swinging seat struck Duane Adams in the head after his brother pulled back the swing. He was taken to a doctor for stitches and dressing. the wound is described as serious but not life threatening and he remains uncomfortable.

Lutheran Choir Party at Preston Country Home

Lloyd Gerald, director of the Lutheran church choir, hosted about 50 guests at his Oldham country home. An afternoon of games and contests ended with a wiener roast and informal music. Rev and Mrs Eid joined the choir party.

Plan Childhood Education Week at Aberdeen NS Teachers college

Plans are under way for Childhood Education Week at Northern State Teachers College from June 19 to 22 as part of the summer school. Dr Mary Dabney Davis of the United States Bureau of Education in Washington DC will lecture all week. Her studies provide a reliable pattern for child education. She is a clear, forceful speaker well acquainted with nursery kindergarten and primary education. The schedule includes assemblies evening lectures daily class periods and open discussions. Lectures are open to the public and classes may be audited or taken for credit.

Memorial day program in Gann Valley honors veterans

The Memorial day observance in Gann Valley featured Reverend H R Keithahn delivering the keynote address at a program by Abernathy post American Legion and Auxiliary. Pearle Fraser led an Auxiliary service, Melba Hathaway recited Gettysburg, the school orchestra provided music under Jessie Oates, and a cemetery salute followed.

Luther Leaguers Gather For Aberdeen Circuit Convention

Groton June 1 The annual Luther League convention of the Aberdeen circuit of the Norwegian Lutheran church will be held at Langford church June 2 to 4. Delegates from 25 churches are expected with visitors. Guest speaker Rev Roy Olson prison chaplain Minnesota. Choral Union concert closes the gathering under Carl B. Halls of Webster.

Mobridge Rail Shipments Jump in May Grain Rise

Mobridge reports show that for the first 20 days of May grain shipments on the Tramy Missouri river division of the Milwaukee railroad rose 609 percent from 1932 levels, with a 671 percent increase in the first 10 days. A week saw 114 carloads of grain moved, while elevators held 874,015 bushels. Weekly exports included 32 carloads of livestock and six carloads of lignite coal.

Dr Keithahn to Instruct Red Cross First Aid Courses

Dr Mildred Keithahn will teach Red Cross first aid courses in Gann Valley summer. Preliminary enrollment included 15 junior 10 senior 3 advanced students. After 15 hours of lectures demonstrations and practice a standard exam based on First Aid to the Injured grants a Red Cross certificate.

Alpena Boy Cuts Finger In Mower

Kenneth Briggs son of Mr and Mrs Leslie Briggs narrowly escaped severe injury while playing with a lawn mower. A stick got in the blades as he attempted to remove it with his fingers causing the mower to move and a finger to be injured requiring two stitches.

Birthday party honors Leslie Briggs ninth birthday

Mrs Leslie Briggs hosted a party for her son Leslie's ninth birthday with games from three to five, lunch served by Mrs Briggs and her daughter, and a candle trimmed cake. Guests included Leonard Lehr, Richard Plate, Raymond Scheel, Grace Funke, Beverly Poeschl, and Sunday school teacher Mrs John Funke. A four week confirmation school opened at the German Reform church with 12 pupils, led by Rev Kruger.
