Barge Colossus Promises Lower Freight Costs on Upper Mississippi
The 2000 ton barge ships from Minneapolis down the Mississippi this week carrying wheat to showcase the nine foot channel on the upper river. It dwarfs the 500 ton barges common on the St. Louis to Twin Cities run and promises economies through higher capacity and efficiency. The first of its size to reach Minneapolis, it underscores the need for peak upper river service to reduce freight costs and widen markets for the Northwest.
