Farm Crop Breeding Plots Deepen State College Work
At South Dakota State College the 25 acre experimental plots test 75 barley varieties 50 cat varieties 20 flex varieties and two grass types. Dr S P Swanson notes plots mimic a big family where wheat oats and other crops are cross bred through careful isolation and multi year selection to produce true breeding seeds. Eight students assist harvesting by hand and wrapping each variety separately to prevent mixing while PhD level staff verify potential new varieties before public release.
