Newspapers Ordered To Cut Newsprint Use Again In 1943
The War Production Board instructed publishers to further cut newsprint consumption in the third quarter of 1943 by up to five percent for large users. An initial 25 ton exclusion applies to newspapers using under 500 tons per quarter. The move follows a December 31 limit at 100 percent of 1941 paid circulation tonnage plus 3 percent waste and aims to aid smaller papers. The plan mirrors recommendations from the industry advisory committee and labor advisory group.
