Snow Removal Is Big Item

South Dakota spent about 200000 on snow removal last winter, the highest annual total yet. J H Lake, state highway engineer, cites severe conditions since roads were kept open year round. The state owns 106 truck plows, 69 tractor plows, five rotary plows, plus county rigs, used continually for nine days. Earlier winters cost less, with 1931 under 50000 and 1930 near 139000. Prevention focuses on road design, snow fences, weed cutting, high fills, wide ditches, and borrow pits to reduce future trouble. Winds from the northwest dictate snow placement, though some storms blew from the south or east.
