In New York July 6 1932 Al Smith declares support for the Democratic Party while avoiding direct endorsement of Franklin D Roosevelt. Chicago reports Jouett Shouse backing Roosevelt and Garner as the 1932 Democratic ticket amid intra party disputes.
Fair tonight and Thursday with a slight rise in temperatures. South Dakota generally fair tonight and Thursday with a modest temperature change.
Washington July 6 A two hour conference between President Hoover and Senate and House leaders on the 2 122 000 000 Wagner Garner relief bill ended with a breach remaining between the legislatures and executive. Garner said later that there was agreement on all points except loans to individuals and proposed further talks. House Democratic Leader Runes insisted the bill move ahead as if no agreement could be reached. Garner declared he would fight Hoover on relief policy and pressed for broader reconstruction corporation lending to all to avoid favoring any class.
Dr J S Tschetter, long time supervisor of Beadle County health board, is named county physician at 400 a year. He will handle all medical services in relief cases and provide hospital care at 2.50 per day per patient, with no fees for medical or surgical work.
In Rapid City on July 6 7 Mr Maggie Johnson Monarch Mont and formerly of Minneapolis discovered Dakota City South Dakota by driving Cheyenne river brakes about 43 miles east locating no town. A 1883 sale left Dakota City as empty lots paying taxes unseen for 33 years. Dakota City proved a flop with no buildings and a distant railroad crossing the river.
Rainfall covered most of South Dakota with heavier early week rain in the northeast. Government meteorologist M E Blystone reports generally favorable conditions for farm work with corn mostly fine though varied. rye and winter wheat and barley cut. alfalfa meadows pastures potatoes flax satisfactory. stock good to excellent.
Iowa crops show very good condition with corn 1 day ahead of normal. Much of the crop has been laid by though some fields are too tall to cultivate. Occasional tassels appear, cool moist weather aids small grain harvest, winter wheat ripened and oats in milk to dough stage with fair to poor yield potential.
Rapid City reports Camp Rapid has been made the permanent national guard campsite for South Dakota. The decision followed real estate transactions involving Col W A Hazle Aberdeen adjutant general and the Pennington county board of commissioners. Hazle acts as trustee for the state national guard. The Slacre tracts lie west of Rapid City at Rapid Canyon mouth, site of the encampment for 16 years.
George S. Milner head of the grain stabilization corporation reports 15,000,000 bushels of American wheat sold to China opened new marketing for U S farmers. The sale was on long term credit and aided flood relief by exchanging labor for wheat, helping flood protection along the Yangtze.
Milwaukee railroad crop report for northern South Dakota notes ideal weather with showers aiding progress. Rye begins harvest, wheat and other grains improve with expected record yields. Barley, oats, flax show strong prospects. corn and weeds face limited grasshopper pressure with no major damage anticipated.
In Fort Pierre a school board race was decided by a coin flip after ballot counts tied between Mrs. Edine Hodoval and Mrs. Sol Hoy. Hodoval won the flip and the seat.
A severe hail wind and rain storm hit Centerville causing broken windows, flooded basements, roof leaks, and damaged cars. The 20 minute storm left corn stalks stripped in fields and widespread garden and crop damage near Centerville and Beresford three miles north of there.
The Prohibition party moves to name Senator Borah as presidential candidate while seeking unified support from national organizations. Canon Chase urges delaying action until a July Washington conference. Young delegates push to draft Borah and consider a name change to Constitution Party with a full platform.
In Sioux Falls on July 6 Helen Reuter a 12 year old Humboldt girl crippled in an October auto accident received 15003 damages for injuries. The acknowledgment of satisfaction of judgment was filed after Judge L J Fleeger denied a defense motion by Hartford farmer Edward F Engel for a new trial.
The American round the world duo Mattern and Griffin arrive in Berlin aboard the Century of Progress after an 18 hour 41 minute Atlantic crossing from Harbor Grace. They set two new records and lead the Berlin leg ahead of Post and Gatty, who reached the city earlier.
RACUSE N Y July 1 P New York state invites both Herbert Hoover and Franklin D Roosevelt to address the state fair in September. Director J Dan Ackawarm announced after conferring with Charles H Baldwin. If Hoover accepts, the addresses may occur on separate days as the governor typically attends.
Pierre July 6 Plans to seek a five year moratorium on federal seed and feed loans will be discussed at Mandan when Minnesota Montana and Dakota governors meet. Governor Green travels to North Dakota with Dr Carle Lenjeer to coordinate farm relief amid low crop prices and mounting loan payment concerns.
Mattern and Griffin plan a perilous 3,403 mile non stop leg from Berlin across Europe to Siberia and Nome. They overflew Cape Freels to Harbor Grace seeking guidance as fog narrowed options and fuel ran low. They anticipate sunny weather in the east while daring a route via the Arctic to return home.
