Farm debt relief plan aims at sustainable repayment

Farmers using supervised FSA credit may receive debt adjustments through local farm debt adjustment committees. Community volunteers mediate between debtors and creditors to align payments with a sound farm and home management plan. Adjusted indebtedness depends on future income, with extensions possible and continued FSA support. An agreement in South Dakota with the Federal Land Bank of Omaha seeks to extend distressed Land Bank loans based on income from developed plans.

Soil Testing Important Step for Seedling Health

Feb 29 report from Brookings notes South Dakota farmers returning land to grass should test soil for seedling blight before planting. Prof C J Franzke of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station explains this blight damages Braig seedlings 3 to 6 weeks after emergence, causing withering plants. A series of steps for testing is outlined.

Soil sampling and grass seeding experiment guidance

Professor Franzke advises collecting four to five small soil samples from a field, mixing them into a single sample, and planting grass seed half an inch deep in a well drained container. Plant 100 seeds, water, keep warm for five to six weeks, and expect a good stand if at least half germinate. State College agronomy studies rotation crops to reduce seedling blights in South Dakota.
