Private Utilities To Be Yardstick For Policy Test
Washington officials say the plan would shift from yard stick demonstrations to applying cheap electricity ideas in a major private utility, the Associated Gas and Electric system now in bankruptcy. The government would voice consumer interests during reorganization as it holds over 8 million dollars in tax claims making it a major creditor. Officials caution there is no frontal attack on rates, but see AG E as a testing ground for private utilities serving 4.4 million customers in 23 states, with New Deal aims that lower rates boost overall consumption and profits.
