Captain Backman Succeeds Powell at SDSU

Vermillion Feb 27 Captain Stann fey G Backman infantry will succeed Captain W D Powell as professor of military science and tactics at the University of South Dakota for the school term 1951 32 according to War department order Powell has held the post six years He came with four year extension requests but two one year extensions were granted Backman has been at Fort Benning and University of Georgia and was at Fort Benning for two years He served as a captain in Germany with the Army of Occupation during World War I.

Community groups named to aid farmers in seed loan program

Aberdeen February 27. Community groups are appointed by the Brown County Farm committee to assist in obtaining federal seed loans. Banks Westport Columbia Groton and Aberdeen are designated for distribution of applications. Eligible farmers must show severe losses from 1930s drought or pests and lack seed feed or fertilizer. Not many farmers expected to need loans.

Yankton Singers To Make Extended Tour

Yankton college women's glee club announces a March tour from the 4th to the 30th with chorus quartets violin piano and vocal solos and readings. The group will spend a week in Minneapolis broadcasting on WOCO and WCCO and perform at St. Anthony Park St. Paul Robbinsdale Carleton College and several Minneapolis churches before closing in Hartington Neb and Coleridge.

Governor Green Signs 79 Bills Okayed in Early Session

In Pierre on February 27, Gov Warren Green signed 79 bills approved by both houses. Executive approval covered 41 Senate and 29 House bills, with one House veto. Of 568 total bills, 327 started in the House and 241 in the Senate, while the legislature logged numerous committee actions and postponements across up to 50 days.

Davison county Red Cross chapter surpassed its drought relief quota by 500 dollars with a 1200 dollar check sent to national headquarters in Mitchell. The quota was 700 dollars. County officers praised contributors and noted substantial food shipments alongside cash donations from the area.

Reserve Pilot Visits At Home In Frankfort

Frankfort report on Hubert Rueschenberg reserve pilot for Northwest Airways visiting his mother Mrs Casper Rueschenberg. He previously flew for Universal Air Lines between St Louis Chicago and St Louis Omaha, with barnstorming roots and 160000 miles flown. University of South Dakota Debaters Face Yankton

UD debaters will debate Yankton college in three debates at Yankton on Friday coached by Dallas C. Dickey. The split team includes university women Edna Swenson and Harriet Warner and men Robert Blewitt and Russell Gray. A Sunday session features UD against University of North Dakota at the Vermillion Methodist church.

Walther Pfitzner a pianist and head of the Northern State Teachers College piano department Aberdeen played Of Moonlit Waters his own composition as part of a University of South Dakota concert Thursday night under Mu Phi Epsilon. On Moanin Waters was composed recently at Three Lakes Wis and the performance drew an enthusiastic audience of several hundred students and faculty members.

Farmers Aid Widow Neighbor in Iowa Quiz Farm Rerun

In Draper on February 27 a large group of neighbors and friends helped widow John W. Vernon clear 100 acres of corn totaling about 2,500 bushels. Men used teams and wagons while women supplied meals as the family mourns the loss of Mr. Vernon who died suddenly in January en route to a hospital, leaving seven children.

Kens University bands to judge Madison District Meet
