Gas Tank Blast Hurts No One in City Explosion
A one thousand gallon gas tank welded outside C F Hughes shop at 505 Second Street Southwest exploded yesterday afternoon. Hughes and owner Herbert Nemitz were uninjured though debris ripped Hughes’s overalls and shattered several windows nearby. Hughes cited experience with welding hundreds of tanks as his protection. The blast, heard citywide, preceded by a muffled roar from inside the tank, caused the tank to pancake and damaged the structure. A prior serious injury in a similar incident occurred eleven years ago to Hughes.

Watertown revenue bonds expand public utility growth
The House approved by 70 to 2 a measure sponsored by Watertown utilities enabling municipally owned plants to issue revenue bonds paid from operating earnings. City council approval is required for any expansion and a 15 percent voter petition triggers a city vote. Rep J H Hanten argued bonds are not city debts, only liens on future earnings, while opponents warned of potential plant loss if bonds default.
