South Dakota Shelterbelt Results Under Ford Direction
U S Forest Service states six years of shelterbelt work in South Dakota yielded 2304 miles of belts on 4200 farms with 31 million trees planted. By 1941 another 400 miles were planned, totaling near 3000 miles. Survival has averaged up to 80 percent, despite drought and grasshoppers, and belts reduce wind erosion and improve soil moisture and livestock wintering.
